Our Story
Engineering Sodium-Ion Battery Materials for Scalable Energy Storage
Macsen Energy is the sodium-ion battery materials and technology vertical of Macsen Labs Ltd., focused on the development of battery-grade Prussian White Cathode Active Material (CAM) for sodium-ion batteries, with capabilities spanning across material synthesis and manufacturing, electrochemical testing, coin cell fabrication, and full-cell development.
How it began
Macsen Energy is built on the chemical synthesis and manufacturing legacy of Macsen Labs, a specialty chemicals company manufacturing APIs, dyes, and inorganic compounds in Udaipur since 1952. Every step of our work in Macsen Energy, from material synthesis and optimization to cell fabrication and electrochemical validation, is supported by our experience in materials science and chemical process development.
Our work in sodium-ion batteries began with a different compound entirely. While developing Prussian Blue as a pharmaceutical ingredient (API), which is used for radioactive poisoning, our R&D team noticed scientific literature exploring its fully sodiated form, Prussian White, as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. We ran a simple synthesis out of curiosity. Then, with no glovebox, no coater, no specialised battery equipment, we built a pouch cell by hand using our existing chemistry expertise and the material we had just synthesised. The cell powered an LED. That was the moment we knew we had something worth pursuing.
What began as a research curiosity has since become a dedicated business. Today, Macsen Energy operates a fully equipped battery R&D laboratory for coin-cell fabrication and testing, produces Prussian White at kilogram scale through our existing pilot chemical facility, and holds a provisional patent on a proprietary single-step synthesis route filed in July 2025. We are preparing to commission a pilot cell fabrication line in early 2027. We also have allocated 10,000 sq metres of land for a dedicated ton-level scale-up facility for Prussian Blue Analogue cathode materials and a pilot line for cell fabrication, with construction planned to begin in 2027.
The Spark That Started Macsen Energy
From a hand-fabricated pouch cell that powered an LED to a dedicated sodium-ion battery R&D platform, Macsen Energy’s journey is rooted in chemistry, curiosity, and the ambition to build scalable energy storage solutions made from resources that are indigenously available.
